How We Test

Our testing starts where real work happens: in the field, under repeatable routes, carrying named loadouts. We design protocols that quantify comfort, access speed, weather resistance, and protection so your choice is driven by data, not hype.

Test Philosophy

  • Start with the user: kit, body fit, and scenario determine what "good" looks like.
  • Control variables: standardized weights, routes, and drills keep data comparable.
  • Disclose limits: we publish methods and uncertainties so you can judge fit for your needs.

Standardized Loadouts We maintain named kits that reflect common use cases, such as:

  • 2-body wedding kit: 2 full-frame bodies, 24–70/2.8, 70–200/2.8, 35/1.4, flashes, batteries.
  • Travel hybrid kit: 1 body, 24–105, 16–35, compact drone + 3 batteries, laptop/tablet.
  • Run-and-gun video kit: body + 24–70, mic, small gimbal, batteries, ND set. Each bag is packed the same way using our packing maps, with total weight verified on a calibrated scale.

Fit Profiles and Inclusive Testing We test across varied torsos and body shapes, adjusting harnesses per manufacturer guidance. Notes call out range limits, strap geometry conflicts, and chest/hip-belt efficacy for different builds.

Field Routes

  • Urban Commute: sidewalks, stairs, transit, curb hops; stop-and-shoot intervals.
  • Trail Loop: elevation, uneven surfaces, scrambles, and quick transitions.
  • Airport Sprint: security bins, overhead fit, rapid access at gates. We log distance, pace, temperature, and duration to keep comparisons fair.

Metrics and Instruments

  • Comfort & Stability: subjective comfort scored on a defined rubric; strap slip and sway observed under jogging and stair sections.
  • Access Speed: timed drills to first shot and lens swap with typical configurations.
  • Weather Resistance: sustained spray/rain exposure with dry-towel checks for ingress; zippers and seams inspected post-test.
  • Protection: controlled drop and corner impacts with padded dummies; internal play and compression checked before/after.
  • Breathability: back-panel moisture and heat build-up assessed across routes.
  • Noise & Clean Operation: closure noise noted; loose strap management evaluated for snag/rattle.
  • Travel Compliance: external dimensions measured; fit tested in standard overheads or bins.

Scoring We weight categories by scenario. For example, a wedding kit weights access and quiet operation higher; a mountain day prioritizes stability and weather. We publish both raw metrics (e.g., time-to-shot) and scenario-weighted scores so you can choose what matters most.

Long-Term and Durability Where possible, we retest after months of use. We track zipper wear, hardware failures, fabric abrasion, foam compression, and brand warranty/repair outcomes.

Sample Handling and Bias Controls We purchase or accept time-limited loaners. Acceptance does not guarantee coverage. We do not accept payment for positive placement. Any material relationship is disclosed. Multiple testers cross-check results; updates are labeled with dates and reasons.

Limitations No test can simulate every climate or body type. We document what we measured, the conditions, and what we could not. Use our data as a decision accelerant, and layer in your unique needs.
